Bottom line: If you are shortlisting Nordic sites for AI training capacity on genuine renewable power, Verne’s Keflavik campus belongs on the list. Iceland’s grid is close to 100% geothermal and hydro — the one Nordic grid where “100% renewable” needs no certificate gymnastics. But two things deserve scrutiny before you sign anything.
What checks out
- 140+ MW campus, purpose-built for HPC/AI (DataCenterMap), operational since 2012 with a real deployment track record — including a 15 MW Nscale AI deployment launched on-site.
- Power story is structurally credible. Iceland’s isolated grid is nearly all geothermal/hydro. There is no coal plant on the other side of the certificate.
What to verify before contracting
- PUE is not published at site level. Verne markets efficiency; we found no audited figure this pass. Ask for measured annualized PUE under ISO/IEC 30134-2, not a design target.
- Ownership is French, not Icelandic. Verne is owned by Ardian (Paris) since 2024, after the wind-down of UK-listed D9. For most European buyers that is a sovereignty feature (EU jurisdiction); for buyers needing national control it is a fact to weigh. Iceland is EEA, not EU — data-transfer mechanics differ subtly from an EU member state.
